When little Carmen was born, my live changed forever. One of the first things I realised was how important sleep was. For the whole family! Babies sleep for more than 14 hours a day in their first year. Giving them a warm, secure and comfortable place to sleep is vital. Relatives gave us a baby sleeping bag for Carmen. To my surprise, it had a polyester filling.

Did you ever sleep under polyester bedding yourself? All night long you’re tossing and turning. First you’re too warm, then too cold. It doesn’t breathe properly and makes you feel sweaty. Imagine how your baby must feel, sleeping in polyester for more than 5,000 hours a year. There had be something better…

I live in Switzerland and love to ski. I use fine wool fabrics while skiing. This gave me an idea. Many skiers and athletes use wool because of its unique qualities in extreme weather conditions. Wool keeps your body dry when you exercise and helps to regulate body temperature.

The idea was the start of a long research process. Did a lightweight and washable wool filling for baby sleeping bags even exist? Finally I found what I needed in the Swiss Alps, close to home. Swisswool is a patented natural filling material made out of 88% Swiss wool and 12% vegetable fibres. It has all the unique breathability of wool and it’s washable. It is great for sleeping.

Good and safe sleep is not only about a sleeping bag filling. When babies sleep, their sensitive skin touches the bag on the inside, so I used for the purest fabrics available. BIO Cotton was the obvious choice for our inner lining. It has no traces of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides in it, so there’s no need to worry about allergies. This is just one of the changes I made….I improved many other details to make them really easy to use.

Our baby sleeping bags are produced in Europe to ensure that no children are employed to make them. We also try to keep things local.

Many parents were so enthousiastic and satisfied when they saw how their baby slept that they asked me if I could also make bedding for them. This is what I did next. I developed duvets for adults with the same great Swisswool filling. On the outside they have superfine fair trade batist. Zizzz duvets are made in Switzerland. Try one now and you wonder why you slept that long with down or polyester filling!
